The Aliran annual general meeting on 25 November unanimously passed a resolution calling for a lasting ceasefire in Gaza and for an end to the settler-colonialisation of Palestinian territories.

Resolution on the situation in Gaza

This 47th Aliran annual general meeting,

Recalling that much blood has been shed since 7 October, when Hamas launched an incursion into southern Israel, which resulted in about 1,200 being killed and 240 taken hostage [69 hostages have now been released as part of a prisoner exchange under the present ceasefire],

Noting with alarm the Israeli military’s genocidal response in massacring over 15,000 civilians, including over 6,000 children, and bombing hospitals, schools, homes and places of worship in Palestinian territory [with some 7,000 missing under the rubble],

Recognising the immense suffering of the people of Palestine, who have experienced ethnic cleansing, dehumanisation, mass displacement and apartheid since the creation of Israel in 1948 and now cuts in food, water, electricity and fuel,

Warning that this bloody and spiralling cycle of violence in the volatile West Asia region will only beget more violence,

Observing that international institutions such as the UN and the International Court of Justice and international law have failed to halt the human carnage,

Recognising that Israel has a right to peaceful coexistence but that this is contingent on respect for internationally recognised Palestinian borders,

  1. Calls for an immediate and lasting ceasefire in the attack on Gaza and an end to military manoeuvring in the region;
  2. Calls for the release of all hostages and prisoners illegally or unjustly held captive on both sides;
  3. Urges all UN member nations and ordinary people everywhere to demand an end to the settler-colonialisation of the Palestinian territories of the West Bank, Gaza and East Jerusalem and to facilitate their self-determination and peaceful coexistence;
  4. Demands that humanitarian considerations, aid relief and the reconstruction of basic infrastructure be given top priority by all sides.

I was not able to attend the AGM as I was overseas.

How come only Gaza was brought up at the AGM? How come no member brought up calling for a ceasefire in Ukraine and Sudan?
