Aliran condemns senseless killings of innocent victims in Christchurch

Aliran strongly condemns the hate-filled shootings of innocent Muslim worshippers attending Friday prayers at two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand. The rampage claimed 49 lives with many more critically injured.

All acts of terror perpetrated against members of the human race irrespective of their religious beliefs should be condemned and can never be justified under any circumstances.

It is most disturbing to learn that the primary suspect who was driven to commit this ghastly deed was apparently motivated by white supremacist ideology, with religious overtones, and believed that immigrants were “invaders”.

This reminds us of the inherent danger of extreme supremacist beliefs that deem the deliberate snuffing out of innocent lives as justifiable or even as their ultimate goal. Such racist ideology has no place in New Zealand or anywhere else.

Islamophobia too is a dangerous trend and has no place in a world where we, as members of the human race, should live in peace and harmony. In this connection Aliran is appalled by the insensitive and misguided comments made by Australian Senator Fraser Anning, who basically linked the attack to Muslim immigration.

People with influence, be they political, civil and religious leaders, have a moral responsibility to promote goodwill among all members of the human race and refrain from spreading messages of hate and intolerance.

Many countries around the world have become increasingly multi-ethnic, multicultural and multi-religious over the years. Diversity in today’s world should be embraced and celebrated, and differences should be considered an asset to society as a whole. So let us build bridges and promote greater understanding and acceptance of one another regardless of our religious leanings.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families of those killed and pray that those who survived the senseless attacks will have a speedy recovery. Our thoughts are with them.

Will Malaysian politicians learn anything from this? Will they ever realise that words have consequences?
