Aliran members attending the group’s annual general meeting yesterday condemned the unprovoked US-Israel attack on Iran and the Israeli invasion of Lebanon.
The attacks and invasion have thrown the entire West Asia region into turmoil, resulting in the loss of innocent lives and immense human suffering. The economic repercussions are being felt around the world and could get worse.
They expressed outrage at the violations of international law and the UN Charter and condemned the weaponisation of religion to justify the attacks. They were also alarmed by the catastrophic human suffering caused by the ongoing genocide in Gaza, where tens of thousands of people have been killed.
Addressing issues within Malaysia, Aliran president Anil Netto said the group could build on its earlier People’s Agenda civil society initiative as a general election approaches.
In particular, he said “it is crucial to ensure that the appointments process for key positions in the judiciary, the MACC and the new public prosecutor’s office is transparent and credible”.

Aliran members from the floor reiterated the need for a royal commission of inquiry to investigate allegations of a “corporate mafia” in the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission and to hold the MACC chief accountable for any abuse of power or wrongdoing.
In elections for the new Aliran committee, members re-elected Anil as president.
Mary Magdaline Pereira continues as honorary secretary, Dr Azmil Tayeb as honorary assistant secretary, and Henry Loh as honorary treasurer.
Also re-elected to the executive committee were former Aliran president Dr Prema Devaraj, Dr Mustafa K Anuar, Andrew Wong, Prof Zaharom Nain, Dr Christopher Chong, Dr Por Heong Hong, K Haridas, Sarajun Hoda Abdul Hassan, Dr Lye Tuck-Po and John Fong.
Former Aliran intern Dr Cheah Wui Jia was elected to the committee.
David Yeoh was elected honorary auditor.
