Religious Affairs Minister Na’im Mokhtar’s recent proposal about guidelines for Muslims attending non-Muslim ceremonies has drawn significant public disquiet.
Various community groups have voiced concerns about the proposed guidelines, which the cabinet is set to discuss tomorrow.
Many are worried that the proposal could inadvertently undermine Malaysia’s religious harmony. Others point out that suggesting that Muslims need guidelines for attending non-Muslim events might imply they are susceptible to influence during interfaith interactions.
The proposal’s scope extends beyond the Muslim community, potentially affecting daily interfaith relationships and interactions.
This has led to calls for the minister to engage with leaders of all faiths to address their concerns.

As it stands, many non-Muslims now wonder if they need prior approval from the Islamic development department Jakim to invite Muslim friends to events such as funerals and festive celebrations. What if the events are held in a non-Muslim place of worship at short notice, like in the case of funerals?
A particular concern centres on the suggestion about removing non-Islamic religious symbols during such events. Faith leaders have questioned how it is possible for meaningful religious ceremonies to be conducted without their essential spiritual elements and symbols.
The proposal for such guidelines could face particular challenges in Sabah and Sarawak, where families often comprise members of different faiths living harmoniously under one roof.
Minister Na’im has now indicated his willingness to hold further discussions with Islamic religious bodies following public feedback. However, such consultations might have been more beneficial had they involved comprehensive discussions with all interested parties, both Muslim and non-Muslim, before the proposal was made public.
The focus should remain on preserving the spirit of mutual respect and understanding that has long characterised Malaysia’s diverse society.

This is a good step for the future of our multi-religious country to avoid and prevent misunderstandings when Muslims attending Non-Muslim functions as the subject involves sensitivities which may be misunderstood by some in positions of influence especially some political or religious leaders..
However it may be equally important to have similar rules for similar functions where some Non-Muslims may be attending Muslim functions as this will ensure harmony among all.
Views based for realisation by all and not to hold anyone responsible in case of any misunderstanding. Apologies in advance.
