Aliran categorically condemns the Malaysian government’s defiance of a High Court’s interim stay of deportation of over 1,000 Myanmar migrants who were held in Malaysia.
The deportation of these Myanmar migrants back to their country, which is now full of unrest and uncertainty following a military coup, is unconscionable and bereft of human compassion.
The Malaysian authorities insist those deported agreed to return voluntarily, but how can this be verified? There is emerging information that this may not be the case and that there may be vulnerable groups among those repatriated.
It is utterly shameful that the government saw it fit to deport a group of people whose security cannot be assured at the hands of the military junta, which are already stained with the blood of the Myanmar people protesting against the recent coup.
It is a travesty of justice when the affected group has been denied their right for their deportation case to be heard before a Malaysian court. This has made a mockery of the judicial stay order.

Even if the decision to deport was made prior to the court order, the government should have delayed the deportation to hear the grievances of the Myanmar nationals concerned in court. Why the hurry?
The law must take its course against those who are in contempt of court.

M Ramachelvam informed us there will be a court hearing on March 9th on this deportation.
Dare we hope the court will sanction whoever the officer that authorises the deportation?
Yes, Aliran that deportation in the face of the temporary injunction is despicable . But let’s see our govt. for what it is – it can send our nation’s plane to bring in refugees from Syria.
Do I need to say why?
