ICC arrest warrants: War criminals Netanyahu, Gallant and Deif must be held accountable

Aliran welcomes the International Criminal Court’s issuance of arrest warrants against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, former Israeli defence minister Yoav Gallant and Hamas military commander Mohammed Deif for their alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity.

Over a thousand Israelis were killed on 7 October 2023. Since then, over 45,000 Palestinians, including thousands of children and women, have been killed by the Israeli military in systematic and indiscriminate violence in Gaza. Thousands of other Palestinians also perished before 7 October 2023.

Under the relentless Israeli bombardment and siege, Palestinians are struggling to meet their basic needs like shelter, food, fuel, medicine and electricity.

The genocide committed by the Zionist military calls for justice and accountability. International human rights law must prevail so that genocide enablers and war criminals are brought to justice.

We urge signatories to the Rome Statute to diligently respect and comply with the ICC arrest warrants. They must recognise that such arrests are crucial in preventing future crimes against humanity.

Even non-signatories to the Rome Statute, including Malaysia, are morally obliged to cooperate with the ICC.

Indeed, the Malaysian government should reconsider its current position and ratify the Rome Statute to recognise the ICC. In this way, we too can play a role in apprehending war criminals should they ever step foot on our soil.

No nation, no leader should be permitted to commit crimes against humanity, let alone a genocide, with impunity.
