Aliran views with grave concern the imminent execution of Malaysian Pannir Selvam Pranthaman in Singapore.
Having exhausted all legal avenues, Pannir faces execution on 20 February for a drug-related offence. His case raises serious questions about the mandatory death penalty and its value as a deterrent.
Since his conviction in 2017, Pannir has revealed a remarkable personal transformation. Through his creative work of songs and poetry from death row, he has highlighted the importance of rehabilitation and second chances.
As Malaysia moves towards abolishing the mandatory death penalty, we strongly urge the government to intervene on Pannir’s behalf.
The Malaysian government should engage with Singapore through diplomatic channels to seek an urgent review of his case and a stay of execution.

We join a string of other civil society groups in calling for Malaysia to use its position as Asean chair to advocate for ending the death penalty in the region.
The death penalty, particularly for drug offences, does not align with international human rights standards and the global trend. More and more countries are abolishing capital punishment.
Every life deserves a second chance.
