Aliran condemns the blocking of the popular Malaysia Today website by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC). It is an unprecedented and worrying development.
Such an action runs counter to the guarantee of no-censorship under the Multimedia Super Corridor regime. Not only that, it violates the citizens’ right to freedom of expression and their right to access to information.
This ban may be an attempt by the government to make an example out of Malaysia Today for others websites and blogs – especially those perceived to be critical of the government and the ruling BN coalition.
The blocking of this popular website just days before the 51st Merdeka anniversary makes hollow the significance of the country’s attainment of independence from the British.

If anything, this ban may be viewed as an attempt by the government to enslave the minds of an otherwise independent people. The ban is being seen as contemptuous of the intellectual integrity and wisdom of concerned ordinary Malaysians. It also indicates that the government is dragging its feet when it comes to being transparent and accountable.
We call upon the government to immediately lift the block on Malaysia Today.
