Aliran is appalled that the Myanmar military regime is continuing its air strikes in the country even as the Myanmar people are suffering from the 7.7-magnitude earthquake devastation on 28 March and its aftershocks.
The earthquake death toll has risen to over 2,000 (and it could even reach 10,000), with over 3,500 people injured and hundreds still missing.
Yet, air strikes have taken place in the Sagaing and northern Shan regions and in Karen state.
Aliran condemns the inhumane and unconscionable actions by the Myanmar junta – despite calls by the National Unity Government (NUG) and other Myanmar and international actors for an immediate ceasefire.
Malaysia, as the Asean chair, should join the chorus of calls for a ceasefire. It should demand that the Myanmar regime halt its air strikes immediately. Such air strikes will clearly impede the work of international (including Asean) efforts to bring relief to the earthquake victims.

Malaysia itself is helping in relief efforts through Nadma, its agency to manage national disasters. It is, therefore, incumbent on the government to call for an immediate halt to the Myanmar regime’s air strikes.
Finally, Asean as a regional body should demand that the Myanmar military junta implement an immediate ceasefire failing which it should be suspended as an Asean member.
