Aliran condemns controversial Muslim preacher Zamri Vinoth for his offensive comparison of Hindus chanting “Vel, vel!” during Thaipusam to people who are possessed or intoxicated.
(This Hindu chant is actually a reference to a divine spear that symbolises power and righteousness in the victory of good over evil.)
Zamri’s offensive remarks came on the heels of Era FM staff publicly mocking Hindu religious practices during Thaipusam.
No lesson appears to have been learnt from the Era FM case, which sparked widespread anxiety among the Hindu community.
The timing of Zamri’s remarks was especially alarming. It seemed to add fuel to fire at a time when communal tensions among some segments were already running high.

In our diverse society, people should be more sensitive towards and respectful of the rituals of all religious traditions. Most of these traditions are based on philosophies and beliefs that outsiders have no real knowledge or understanding of.
Religious body Jakim rightly pointed out that Islam prohibits the act of mocking other religions. Indeed, all religions proscribe such despicable actions.
The culprits, irrespective of their religious and social backgrounds, should be brought to justice so that similar acts are not emulated by others in future. This is important as such acts could harm inter-ethnic and inter-religious relations in the country.
The lack of effective police action on numerous reports filed in the past over similar insults and hurtful comments by a small band of insensitive Muslim preachers seems to have only emboldened them.
These preachers’ understanding of Hinduism’s multidimensional philosophy and that of many other beliefs is appallingly shallow. This is evident from their flawed lectures on comparative religion.
The authorities must instil confidence in the people that firm action will be taken promptly in all such cases.
To foster respect in our diverse society, Jakim and other faith groups must do more to enhance interfaith sensitivity.
Aliran hopes the Ministry of National Unity will play a more active role in not only resolving such problems but preventing them from arising in the first place.
We welcome minister Aaron Ago Dagang’s call for stern action against those who have insulted the religion of others. Describing such conduct as “unacceptable”, the minister has urged the police and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission to take measures to safeguard national harmony.
