Summon US ambassador to Malaysia: Condemn attacks on Iran

The Malaysian government must spell out to the US ambassador in Malaysia in no uncertain terms the importance of exercising responsible leadership

Aliran strongly condemns the US bombing of Iran on 21 June. The attack violated international rules of the United Nations Charter and were thus illegal.

We call on the Malaysian government to summon the US ambassador and impress on him the need to exercise civility, and to respect other countries, and to facilitate a just peace (including the flow of aid) in West Asia.

The attacks were yet another exercise of US imperial power through armed might against weaker countries. They were also a continuation of the American tradition of attacking countries that refuse to align with or obey US demands. Taken together, these actions are uncivilised in this day and age.

The targets of the attack were Iranian nuclear sites. More importantly, they were attacks on the sovereign territory of Iran.

Iran had not carried out any armed attack on the US, so the US cannot claim it acted in self-defence. Neither was there a threat to or breach of the peace nor an act of aggression against the US.

Clearly, the UN Security Council had not sanctioned the use of armed force. Hence, the US attack was unilateral and a violation of the rules of the UN Charter.

The US’s actions were plain wrong.

The US may be a superpower, but it displays arbitrariness and a complete lack of trustworthiness.

Iran had already subjected itself to the conditions of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, signed by 191 countries.

It also agreed, through the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action in 2015, to restrict uranium enrichment and other nuclear activities in return for relief from sanctions

In 2018 the US unilaterally pulled out of the JCPOA.

US President Donald Trump then decided to negotiate another deal.

But on the weekend that the sixth round of negotiations were to take place between the US and Iran, Israel conducted air strikes on Iran, blowing up the negotiations.

The strikes were conducted with the prior knowledge of the US. This means the negotiations were a farce. Worse, they were a smokescreen for a surprise attack on Iran.

The US itself then bombed nuclear sites in Iran on 21 June.

Such behaviour is uncouth and deceitful in a situation already inherently inequitable, where one or two nuclear powers can dictate who else can or cannot wield nuclear power.

Recent events have shown the readiness with which both the US and Israel would sacrifice talking (the civilised way to resolve differences) for war and violence, the barbaric choice.

The use of force and violence on parties that refuse to toe the line is part of a long, shameful tradition of bullying by the US and other imperial powers.

Since the 1979 revolution, Iran has been steadfast in its support of the Palestinian people – victims of land robbery, ethnic cleansing and genocide by the Zionist state of Israel. While multiple Arab countries have been complicit or damaging to the Palestinian struggle, Iran has been principled and defiant.

This could not be tolerated by the US and Israel.

Unfortunately, the attacks on Iran have also served to divert attention from the ongoing genocide in Gaza and the dispossession of Palestinians in the West Bank.

In fact, the violent excesses of the US and Israel also detract from something far more existentially threatening on a global scale – the climate crisis. At a time when the world needs to act in unison to save the planet from overheating, the US’s attempts to exert dominance is dividing the world. This is unforgiveable.

The Malaysian government must spell out to the US ambassador in Malaysia in no uncertain terms the importance of exercising responsible leadership, especially at this critical time of global upheaval and climate change.

It is not just climate change. The world would be even more endangered if a few more nations decide to imitate the US in violating international law.

We call on the government, as chair of Asean in 2025, to encourage other member nations to follow suit.

Will Aliran also condemn the indiscriminate bombing of Ukraine by the Russians and summon the Russian ambassador? Why the double standards by Aliran?

Indeed. The world must roundly and loudly condemn this violation of international laws. Of Gaza too, we must condemn the shooting of starving civilians who desperatey rush to get food. Denials by the IDF cannot be accepted without international investigation. It is an abomination to use starvation as yet another weapon.

Suffice to say this Govt do not have the courage to condemn the actions of Israel and US for their actions against Iran and Palestinians in Gaza.
I am throughly disgusted with the actions of US and Israel! Who appointed US as the Marshall of this World? Who are they to decide who should have nuclear energy or otherwise!

Better Malaysia mind its own business. We are nothing compared to other countries. Let’s solve the PM’s policy of DNAA to stay in power . Let’s not be busy bodies . Our criticism has no impact !
