A public institution is as good as the trust and respect that the public has towards it.
We, at Aliran, share Inspector General of Police Razarudin Husain’s concerns. The integrity of his police force stands compromised. Several officers have been arrested for drug offences, abuse of power, and other criminal activities.
Indeed, the police are supposed to uphold the law and maintain peace and public order – not break the law. Abhorrent misconduct must not be tolerated because it amounts to a terrible dereliction of duty.
This grave situation demands the creation of an “independent police complaints and misconduct commission” (IPCMC), recommended by a royal commission of inquiry into the police in 2005.
It is clear the current Independent Police Conduct Commission has been less effective in achieving its primary objective of overseeing the conduct of the police force.

We therefore call on the authorities to set up the IPCMC in order to arrest any further erosion in the force’s integrity.
