‘A motion of no-confidence must be brought first on the list’ – Art Harun (2015)

Listen to Azhar Azizan Harun, five years before he was appointed Speaker of Parliament, expounding on how a government may fall if the prime minister ceases to command a majority in Parliament.

In this video published by the Malaysian Insight, Azhar (or Art Harun as he called himself then) draws a distinction between a private member’s motion and a no-confidence motion. A private member’s motion (in this case, a private bill on hudud by Pas), comes after government business in the order paper. In contrast, a no-confidence motion takes priority by convention or constitutional practice, he asserts.

This position appears to be at odds with his current view as Speaker: he now seems to equate a no-confidence motion with a private member’s motion, with both thus coming after government business in the order paper.

What Azhar Harun said then is irrelevant!
But it gives one context and I can say with confidence he is a hypocrite.
What he is doing as Speaker of Parliament now shows the character of this person.
He has allowed power and privileges to blind him to what is right and proper.
In this time and age one has to be careful what one claims to profess or else it will come back to bite you, as in this instance with Azhar Harun.
