Many countries are looking at containers that, with a little bit of creativity and low costs, can be turned into affordable homes, says JD Lovrenciear.
It is time for Malaysia to stop giving excuses for why houses have to be priced beyond people’s reach.
It is also high time we stopped the contractors, builders, bankers and property agents from monopolising this business for their sole, unrealistic and selfish gains.
The government cannot continue to pretend it is always at the mercy of the property markets especially the housing industry.
These days many developing and developed nations are looking at shipping containers that, with a little bit of creativity and low costs, can be turned into affordable homes.

Given Malaysia’s comparatively tiny adult working population and the vast stretches of land available, the government can easily enable citizens to have beautiful, affordable homes while buyers can enjoy improved lifestyles.

Governments – past and present – seem completely unable to see the numerous creative opportunities in the world that prove that homes do not have to be unaffordable.

Housing is a basic necessity just like utilities and there is a pent up demand for affordable houses. So it should be a big concern for any government. You don’t have to be overly concern for the rich and the upper middle class for they are more than capable to overcome their housing needs. It is the b40 and the lower middle class which needs assistance. Therefore the government need it step in and seek a solution not just leave it to the profit minded private sector. If they have no idea how to solve just visit our southern neighbour’s housing board. There’s no shame in learning.
