Being able to accept defeat is the cornerstone of any system that is truly relevant, ethical, and workable, says JD Loverenciear.

If the opposition pact yet again fails in its bid to take over the reins of government, that may not be of paramount concern. After all, they having been trying for six decades.

But the truth is, finally, there is a seismic shift as an increasing number of voters are high on the hopes of seeing change for the first time. The leadership helming the Opposition too is historic; it is an epic episode unseen before.

Hence the question has to be posed to BN: will you be able to take the beating and walk tall if Najib fails to secure the majority to form a new government? This is the question that will be watched closely not only by citizens but by leaders of the world community, trading nations and investors.

Will Najib command his coalition to accept any eventuality gracefully? Will the Umno warlords eat humble pie and take a sabbatical to reflect, reappraise and rebuild their relevance in the next five years?

For six long decades, citizens had given BN the benefit of the doubt with trust and hope to form the government at each general election. That is something of a world record for a (supposedly) democratic nation.

But change is an integral part of the entire cosmos, and BN cannot be an exception.

Being able to accept defeat is the cornerstone of any system that is truly relevant, ethical, workable and purposeful. If citizens vote BN out for the first time, Najib must then show the world that he is a respectable leader by accepting the outcome, commanding his people to let peace prevail, and making a gracefully exit.

Otherwise, this independent nation that flourished in peace and progress might sink like a boulder onto the lap of a foreign nation that may have a serious intention of becoming a political economic superpower in the 21st Century.

If sovereignty, independence and the sacred Constitution of this land is to be preserved, the losing political coalition must walk tall with integrity and grace.

Anything short of this is treason against the people and the nation – and it will destabilise the region too.
