The outcome of the by-elections in Johor this Saturday is crucial to the nation.

We will know tomorrow whether extremism and bigotry will march on aided by Johoreans or whether they will be reined in by caring Johoreans who don’t wish this nation to slide down the path of destruction.

Saner voices have been calling for tolerance and accommodation. These voices deserve our support.

Amanah president Mohamad Sabu’s call for unity and harmony must be echoed by all those who love peace and harmony in the country. Sabu said the victory of his party candidates contesting in the Pulai parliamentary and Simpang Jeram state seats would show that people want to uphold unity and harmony.

Sabu emphasised that such victories would send a message that the people are against the progress of religious and racial extremists.

It is important to prevent religious extremists from creeping into the government administration. If that happens, there will be no end to restrictions to our way of life. This we must not allow.

All caring Malaysians will pray and hope that bigotry and intolerance will not override what is good for the nation. We believe enough ethnic Malays are broad-minded and care for the harmonious life of everyone in Malaysia and will ensure that religious and racial extremists will be defeated in the interest of our future and the wellbeing of the nation.

As for the ethnic minorities, you can’t remain indifferent because of the recent development that has disillusioned many Malaysians.

The granting of a discharge not amounting to an acquittal to Deputy Prime Minister Zahid Hamidi is not justifiable. But don’t let that grievance deter you from voting on Saturday. If you do that, unwittingly, you will be aiding intolerance and extremism to take over the country. When that takes place, you cannot reverse it. Please don’t cut your nose to spite your face.
