The Queen Consort of the Sultan of Selangor, Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin, has called for a stop to the Shah Alam City Council’s “catch and kill” programmes of stray dogs.
How did the authorities come up with this horrendous idea of “operasi tangkap dan bunuh” to address the problem of stray dogs? This is indeed mind-boggling.
In the first place, this operation violates the “Madani” government’s concept of care and compassion.
No religion or civilised society condones such cruelty.
The queen consort has made several suggestions that are wise, caring and civilised. These must gain traction among policymakers across the nation.
- Sign up for Aliran's free daily email updates or weekly newsletters or both
- Make a one-off donation to Persatuan Aliran Kesedaran Negara, CIMB a/c 8004240948
- Make a pledge or schedule an auto donation to Aliran every month or every quarter

Getting developers to provide space for stray animal shelters is a great idea that will not only showcase corporate social responsibility but give added meaning to Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s reform agenda.
The people must rally behind the queen consort to ensure that cruel ‘little Napoleons’ stop their heinous plans.
Elected representatives should table this concern at the state legislative assembly to obtain immediate redress from the authorities.
