Nightmarish floods reveal a crisis-oriented, reactive society

Rampant corruption has also affected the quality of services, maintenance and infrastructure

Our society, since time immemorial, has been crisis-oriented or reactive – like the fire brigade that comes only when there is a fire or traffic lights being installed only after so many accidents and deaths have taken place at the same junction.

Monitoring and preventive measures are not in their administrative agenda.

National pride is dead, and we worship the parasitic worms accruing from it.

The ones with initiative are put down because they directly make other lazy and destiny(takdir)-oriented ones look bad – as if God already told them about their destiny in this transitional world of ours.

Corruption is so rampant that the resulting poor quality of services, maintenance and construction imperils ordinary people.

We need to overhaul the whole convoluted system rather than fine-tuning it.

But we glorify racial and religious bigotry and worship ever-useless, power-hungry, manipulative leaders. They cultivated a culture of dependency with a subsidy and dole mentality – thus, denigrating and decimating their own kind and blaming others for it.

Not many are truly following and practising the precious teachings of the Quran.

Instead, many have allowed their spirituality to succumb to the dictates of capitalist materialism and Arabisation.

And then we become paranoid and scapegoat others for it.

Our civil servants are either waiting for politicians to urge them to get cracking or doing it by themselves, if they have any self-leadership, and don’t wait for the latter to push them to serve the public and country. If both don’t get cracking the public and country will be the worse for it.
