Diplomatic bonds transcend time: A Christmas story

A touching Christmas gesture from a former veteran diplomat to his colleague demonstrates the lasting bonds that cross ethnic and cultural boundaries

True friendship reveals itself in touching gestures between old friends which withstand the test of time.

Such gestures might seem rare these days. However, they remain common among the ‘old school’ generation, whose friendships have always crossed the ethnic and religious boundaries.

Former diplomat Yeop Adlan Che Rose visited his old colleague and friend, A Nelson, who is unwell at his home in Bangsar Park, to wish him a Merry Christmas.

The visit lifted Nelson’s spirits and became a precious Christmas gift to him. Such moments cannot be quantified in ringgit and sen, as they come from the heart.

The two former colleagues reminisced about the old times when they served at the Malaysian High Commission in Singapore. Both found joy in rekindling fond memories when their paths crossed in the diplomatic service.

Yeop Adlan had served as Malaysian envoy in several countries. In Singapore, he served as deputy high commissioner.

Nelson, now 94, worked as counsellor for information at the high commission in the island republic. He said Yeop Adlan had always kept in touch with him. He was particularly moved by this visit, during which former colleague brought along his daughter, Marianee.

Nelson reflected that the spirit of unity among the people of Malaysia during his era was strong. He expressed hoped that such goodwill would inspire the present generation.

My own wish for 2025 is that more people in Malaysia will learn from the spirit of goodwill and friendship shown by Yeop Adlan and Nelson. Their example offers valuable lessons about genuine friendship for people from all walks of life, especially the younger generation.

Such moments are getting less and less as the older generation pass on. We need the majority of Malaysians to appreciate this which is rather bleak.
