Aliran held a public forum ‘Merdeka, multiracialism and dissent, without fear or favour’ on 23 August at the Kuala Lumpur Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall to honour the late Dr Tan Chee Khoon, known as ‘Mr Opposition’. About 150 people attended.

Dr Tan’s daughter, lawyer Tan Poh Lai, shared his life story through video and photos.

Economist Emeritus Professor Jomo Kwame Sundaram, who knew him personally, reflected on his legacy of multi-ethnic cooperation and principled politics.

The event was moderated by Aliran honorary secretary Mary Magadaline Pereira.

Several guests, including Dr Abdul Hameed Abdul Kadir, Rev Herman Shastri, Munisamy Arumugam and Colin Nicholas, shared personal memories of Dr Tan. Speakers also discussed how his ideals of constructive dissent and multiculturalism apply to Malaysia’s political landscape today.

The forum marked the start of a roadshow honouring Dr Tan, also covering Johor Bahru, Ipoh and Penang.
