It is time the government set up a taskforce to detect these recalcitrant business people and put their businesses in order, says JD Lovrenciear.

News reports on the Taman Desa condominium collapse have revealed the extent of alleged blatant labour violations by contractors.

Not only were undocumented workers reportedly being employed but even those with documents were not treated ethically.

The subcontractors signed up by the main developer had allegedly violated the labour laws, including not providing insurance coverage and safe lodging. And they had the audacity to shut down their registered business premises and go into hiding when authorities called on them.

Probably, given the tens of thousands of undocumented migrant workers in the country, many more businesses may be guilty of similar offences.

It is time the government set up a taskforce to detect these recalcitrant business people and get them to put their businesses in order.

With so many brazen, blatant violations of employment, it is a nightmare to think what other violations these unethical business people might be guilty of.

What do the associations that fight for the rights of contractors and developers have to say? I wonder too what the main developer has got to say.

Are they all going to wash their hands off?

everyone knows that the foreign workers are badly treated but as usual, they keep quiet because they do not like to disturb the business people who can “grease “them so that the business people can profit. I know one man who became a millionaire using these workers

Are Contractors more important to those in power and enforcement than the workers most of whom may not even be voters as they may be foreigers?
