Demonstrating care and concern for another human being can take many forms.
Kindness, compassion and empathy can be expressed through words and deeds. But deeds are more meaningful than words, as they require time, effort and frequently, financial contributions.
These gestures of humanity stem from the depth of the human spirit. They also demand a deep sense of conviction and self-sacrifice.
In Malaysia, individuals, societies and religious institutions regularly demonstrate their charitable spirit and humanity towards the less fortunate.
The Church of Our Lady of Fatima in Brickfields, Kuala Lumpur, exemplifies this through its “Kasih Meals” programme.

To mark the World Day of the Poor on 17 November, this church organised its third Kasih Meals event on 30 November. Previous distributions had taken place during Lent and in July this year.
This time, the church distributed lunch packs to about 100 homeless individuals and foreign contract workers employed by Kuala Lumpur City Hall.
The word kasih means love. And what better way to show love and concern for the most vulnerable in society than through such endeavours?
These acts of humanity come from the heart. They reflect our commitment to supporting vulnerable people living in challenging circumstances. More importantly, such efforts bridge the ethnic and religious divides in our plural society.
And so, 20 parishioners ventured through Pudu, Chow Kit Road and Brickfields and delivered packed meals to the homeless and to foreign workers.
Mindful of the diverse community they service, the church carefully considered the dietary requirements of meal recipients. Since many of them were Muslim, religious considerations were paramount when purchasing the meals.
The number of meals at each event depends on the donations collected from parishioners and well-wishers. This approach ensures the programme’s sustainability and community involvement.
Life gains meaning through small, thoughtful acts of compassion and humanity. It is not about doing great things but about doing little things in meaningful ways.
May God bless all those who donated and gave their time on a weekend for their altruistic spirit. Without their noble contributions, such compassionate acts would not be possible.
