Mahiaddin’s political exploits must be the last for Malaysia

When leaders place politics above principles, they should not expect the people to travel the whole the full distance with them

The nation is gripped with breathtaking suspense.

Monday, 16 August, seems like an endless wait: the embattled prime minister will have an audience with the Agong – which could seal the fate of the sitting prime minister and his 70-plus cabinet members.

Will Monday see a permanent end to the political mess created by a motley group of politicians who took power through the back door, obliterating a democratically elected government?

Or will the nation slide further into murkier political battles at the expense of the people, who are threatened with Covid infections and mourning the loss of over 10,000 lives?

All sorts of speculation will choke social media and we will witness even more  political manoeuvres.

One thing is certain: the people want a capable, strong, fair and just government to put the country back on tracks in the battle against Covid and to resolve the economic and social mess. They have had enough of politicians who put politics above principles.

Law-abiding citizens will turn to the palace for wisdom to prevail. Our politicians are lucky: Malaysians have a solid track record for being peace-loving, nonviolent citizens. But the youth of today – in Malaysia and all over the world – seem to be less patient about putting an end to greed, injustice and poor performance.

Mahiaddin Yasin will have to face up to his political misadventures these past 17 months – the worst record of a leader that will be chiselled in the pages of our history.

When leaders place politics above principles, they should not expect the people to travel the whole the full distance with them. This our politicians must learn fast.

Malaysians are right to demand relentlessly and vigorously that politicians put principles before politics, as we battle the health pandemic, economic failures and social agonies with a #kitajagakita (we’ve got each other’s back) clarion call.

The pillars of this peace-loving nation should never again ever be allowed to be shaken. Our Federal Constitution and the constitutional monarchy are our national insurance for a greater future and should never ever be exploited by those hungry for power and wealth.
