A retired civil servant and veteran social activist has been given a rare and remarkable recognition with an entry into the Malaysia Book of Records for the highest number of private articles published in two local mainstream newspapers.

On 3 June the book’s management awarded this distinguished honour to S Sundareson, 89, for the 592 articles he succeeded in getting published in The Star and New Straits Times over the years.

These articles reflected the writer’s perspective and provided significant interactive quality which any worthy newspaper needs. The well-written letters were pertinent, polite and public-spirited.

Sundareson’s letters covered a wide range of subjects, providing useful but brief background information on a range of public interest issues. These included the evolution of our identity cards, leading personalities, suggestions to improve the public service, and reflections on national events of historical significance.

Sundareson started his clerical service career at district level in Kuala Kangsar and later moved to senior federal level administrative positions, initially at the National Registration Department in Petaling Jaya and later at the Ministry of Defence. At the Registration Department, he assisted various elected officials in facilitating applications for citizenship – a hot issue at the time.

Sundareson from Ipoh is undoubtedly a model public servant of impeccable integrity and sensitivity, who certainly deserved this honour.

Congratulations would be in order.
