Ordinary citizens are now praying that wisdom will prevail in the selection of the new prime minister, writes JD Lovrenciear.

How can MPs who won a seat in Parliament on a particular party ticket just decide on their own to switch to another party?

Wouldn’t they be reneging on the very cornerstone on which democracy thrives, namely trust and honour?

Election candidates go to the voters and ride on the strength of their respective parties. Voters elect them based on both their individual honour and party affiliation. The voters trust they will deliver on their promises using the strength of their respective parties.

Given this reality, shouldn’t we condemn party defectors who ditch their constituents and switch allegiances to rival parties when the going gets tough?

And shouldn’t we also condemn those parties that canvas and secure the endorsements of such MPs who switch parties like they change clothes?

What is the meaning of democracy? How can we build a nation or even pledge loyalty to king and bring peace and progress to society when we are ethically, morally and principally bankrupt of virtues?

Such demeaning acts – committed to convince the palace that they have enough MPs on their side – are deplorable. They amount to a betrayal of voters who gave them the ticket to Parliament.

Pakatan Harapan now claims it has the support of a simple majority of MPs backing the leadership of Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

Many ordinary citizens are now praying that wisdom will ultimately prevail in the confirmation of the new prime minister.
