It is difficult to believe that a group of Muslims have petitioned the Agong to pardon a felon like Najib Razak for his past conviction and ongoing trials. It is mind boggling!

Why is this pardon being sought? So that Najib will become prime minister again, they said!

God forbid such insanity. A person who plundered and looted his own country does not deserve any royal pardon. Like anybody else, he must pay his due.

A person who had stolen a milk tin to feed his baby did not receive a royal pardon. This poor man – literally, he was – had to face the wrath of the law. When billions were looted, how can that person receive a pardon, royal or otherwise?

How could these people seek such a pardon? What did the Prophet say about leaders who commit crime and betray the trust of the people?

It is a brazen request! The gall of them even to think that the Agong will entertain their petition!

Is there no place in our country for other honest people to provide leadership? Surely, we are not scraping the bottom of the barrel!

The pardon will, they rationalise, pave the way for Najib to become prime minister again – not only that, some may rationalise that it would also pave the way for more looting and plundering and rewarding for these henchmen who seek this remedy.

The chairman of this group, Pertubuhan Sahabat Ulul Amri Malaysia (PSUAM), Syed Muhammad Imran Syed Abdul Aziz, asserted: “This is an opportunity to save Malaysia. Najib fulfils two criteria – he is trusted by His Majesty and he has experience running the country.”

What makes these people claim that Najib is trusted by His Majesty? Was there such a proclamation from the Agong in spite of Najib having been found guilty, albeit his appeal is still pending in the Court of Appeal?

Yes, he had plenty of experience, no doubt about it, but in the end, who benefited from that experience – the country or Najib himself?

How could this group be blind to the fact that Najib almost bankrupted the country? Have they forgotten that the US Attorney General, Jeff Sessions, branded him as the world’s worst kleptocrat? On 9 March 2018, the attorney general described what happened in Malaysia as “kleptocracy at its worst”.

Mariam Mokhtar wrote that “Kleptocracy is the hallmark of Malaysia” way back on 5 October 2016.

This denigrating image of Malaysia was created by none other than Najib himself when he was Prime Minister. We were shamed in the eyes of the world by him and his cronies.

Stop this foolish notion of a pardon; it is undeserved.

Let’s be guided by what the Prophet said on justice:

The Messenger of God got up and delivered a speech, saying: “People before you were destroyed because when the noble among them stole, they would let him go; and if the poor and weak stole they would punish him. By God! If Fatimah, the daughter of Muhammad stole, I would cut her hand off.”

I would agree but only if one condition is fulfilled which is non-negotiable, and that is Jho Low must be appointed as the finance minister…
