While the public are urged to cut down on the use of plastics, the remains of plastic banner and bunting ads are choking the drains and littering the streets, writes JD Lovrenciear.
Will the Malaysian business community and enforcement authorities ever learn? The photo above is telling.
Road-side advertising has become a permanent business strategy. While businesses will argue that such banner and bunting ads boost sales, approving authorities are only too happy to collect tidy fees for renting out the street lights that line our roads.
But it is an eyesore, and safety is completely ignored. Coils and coils of wire are left stuck to lamp-posts, which boast modern lighting installed at public expense. Companies putting up their ad material just tear down the expired banners, bunting and wood and leave them there for nature to avenge.
Despite the government urging consumers to go green and supermarkets discouraging the use of plastic bags, we have plastic banners and bunting choking the drainage along many roads.

While homes are told to segregate household waste, companies are let off as they put up, pull down and leave behind their plastic ads, wood and wire along the roads.
How on earth are we as a nation going to be a developed nation, proud like other nations that have high standards of business ethics and civic consciousness?
Or will we again postpone 2025 (the deferred target for Vision 2020) to yet another future year?
