If lawyers and judges have professional integrity, they must immediately demand a thorough investigation and clean up of the judiciary, writes JD Lovrenciear.

How on earth is the country ever going to cleanse itself of the corruption that plagues so many institutions of governance?

Many ordinary people in warongs across the nation are not too far wrong in their belief that our institutions of governance and not a few politicians are alarmingly corrupt.

Shocking allegations by a lone courageous Court of Appeal judge, Hamid Sultan Abu Backer, have now come out into the open. He claimed there is widespread “judicial rowdyism” within the supposedly hallowed hallways of justice which deserves public attention.

His allegation that certain members of the judiciary have been aiding private parties and politicians to defraud the government of public funds is a serious one – for it is a crime against the entire nation.

If our lawyers and judges have professional integrity, they must immediately protest and demand a thorough investigation and clean up of the Malaysian judiciary, which has long been suspected of being tainted.

Heads of religious communities should not be detached, just arguing from their pedestals that they are mere servants of God and cannot be dragged into worldly matters.

Civil society leaders must engage in a collaborative spirit to come out in full force to demand the eradication of this scourge, which has infiltrated the judicial system.

Malaysians cannot pretend that it is none of their business and leave it to the government to investigate. Good people who value integrity and responsibility must step forward and demand a through clean-up.

All the crooks must be exposed by the media, which should work for true justice to prevail. Journalists must bravely spill the beans without fear or favour.

If we cannot do this, the country will continue to sink while the looting by well-connected unprincipled people in power continues in secrecy.

Over to you lawyers, judges, religious leaders, civil society activists and all truly patriotic citizens.

We need another huge Bersih demonstration to pressure the Government to accelerate reforms, fight corruption, clean up and strengthen our political institutions.
