Stop dragging the police into political war games

Politicians must never use the police to further their political agenda

According to a news report, opposition chief Hamzah Zainudin claimed he still received some intelligence about the upcoming state polls from his “friends in in the police”.

Speaking at a Perikatan Nasional rally on 23 July, the former home minister bragged the friends had purportedly given him information that PN was actually leading in Selangor.

The police serve the government of the day by ensuring the security and safety of the people. They do not and should not serve ousted politicians.

For a former home minister to reportedly claim he is being fed with political information not only insults the government of the day but also punctures the trust and reputation of the police.

It puts the inspector general in an ugly spot because, if what Hamzah claims is true, then it is tantamount to a top cop failing in his job of keeping his personnel in line.

Not only that, Hamzah’s remarks have the effect of undermining the public’s faith in the police force.

It is incumbent upon the present minister of home affairs and the police chief to take the necessary, speedy action.

If it is established that there are members within the forces pledging allegiance to a former minister to the detriment of the image of the force and the position of the serving home minister, then quick action must be taken.

The government must get to the root of this claim and hold the opposition leader liable.

Politicians must never use the police to further their political agenda.

The integrity of the nation would be at great risk if some personnel in the police force do not live up to their calling.

Politicians should never undermine the force responsible for ensuring the safety and security of the people.
