Stop politicians and top civil servants from getting involved in underhanded government-corporate dealings

The failure to even admit the serious level of corruption in the country goes against the national interest

Wipe out corruption in Malaysia - BENEDICT LOPEZ/ALIRAN

Opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim has called on the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission to investigate two companies, both of which were recently connected to controversies regarding abuses of power in securing government contracts.

Once again, we may be witnessing how top politicians and civil servants may have put their hands into the cookie jar.

This is humiliating for the nation as it stains its image and reputation. It seems as if no one cares anymore about the future of the nation.

First, Indonesia exposed how Malaysian authorities and recalcitrant employers exploited Indonesian migrant workers and now Bangladesh too has made similar claims.

Such exploitative and even corrupt practices seem to get bolder and more brazen with each passing year. I fear this nation is sinking further into the sewers of corruption and no one seems to care anymore.

Not only have current court trials been ineffective as powerful warnings to all those intending to break the law, it now also looks as if corruption is fast becoming part of the national culture.

It is high time for the prime minister to step up and show some real patriotism by combating corruption. He should call for an immediate end to politicians and top civil servants getting involved in corrupt practices and easy profiteering. The private sector should also not be spared if they are involved in unethical business deals.

Any politician, top civil servant or captain of industry who smears the good name of Malaysia through corrupt practices should not go unpunished.

The nation has entered a crippling stage of corruption. The failure to even admit this goes against the national interest.

Politicians will care for the people and the country. Political crooks will care for themselves and plunder the people and country wealth to fill their bank accounts. So how many politicians are there these days???
