A celebration of corruption?

Didn’t any of the Umno delegates at the recent Umno general assembly think about questioning the RM2.6bn ‘donation’ or the scandal involving 1MDB, wonders Damian Denis.

The whole 2015 Umno general assembly was perceived by some as a celebration of a culture of corruption, as whistleblowers were hammered and the opposition discredited in every way possible.

The direction of the assembly seemed to be geared towards winning the next general election (on a platform of unchecked corruption?).

This is what Umno is presumably offering. But if it wins it will be even more outrageous in the way it has been operating and in making the unethical more palatable.

What was in the minds of these delegates really? Didn’t any of them think about questioning the RM2.6bn ‘donation’ or the scandal involving 1MDB? Surely, as grassroots leaders, they would be aware of the thinking and feeling on the ground. But they chose not to speak up. Have they allowed money politics to cloud their thinking?

This is something unacceptable by any standards. Just think about it: Anwar was imprisoned a second time; Pas decided to go on its own with Najib prodding them to join forces with Umno once again; opposition leaders are being hauled up; repressive bills have been drafted and rushed through Parliament – and now this!

Why these leaders keep getting themselves elected may be just mind-boggling to many thinking Malaysians. But who elects them?

How long do you think Malaysians need to put up with such blatant rhetoric and dubious actions that stink to the lowest hell? The voters must decide that.
