Unsung heroes of the general election: Election Commission officials

Many of the Election Commission officials on duty discharged their duties with professionalism and dedication

Amid the euphoria of the general election, we paid much attention to the election results and who were the winners and losers in the various parliamentary and states seats.

There was hardly any focus on the unsung heroes of the general election: the ordinary Election Commission officials.

From my observations at the Bukit Bandaraya national school in Bangsar, first as a voter then as a polling agent, I noticed that the Election Commission officials on duty discharged their duties with professionalism and dedication. I could not find a flaw in anything the officials did while performing their duties.

Election Commission personnel were helpful to all voters that turned up to vote, especially the senior citizens and people with disabilities. The staff frequently went out of the way to help the less fortunate members of society.

It was heartening to see the efficiency among these well-trained Election Commission personnel who performed their duties well on this very important day.

Kudos to all these personnel who worked so hard to ensure the success of the general election and gave voters the reassurance that the general election was indeed free and fair.

For all of Malaysia’s shortcomings, we can take pride that we have always held our general elections against a backdrop of peace and the absence of fear and violence that is common in many other countries.

Keep up the good work, Election Commission!

Dear Ben.
Am in total agreeent with you that the amount of care and dedication, given especially to the Seniors, was definitely of ‘Par Excellence’ rating, and my wife wanted me to convey this observation, especially to Fahmi. As three of the early birds, my wife and I were quickly shepherded to our alloted lots on the ground floor of the school We were probably in and out of the school within 20minutes. My son had to scale the stairs to get to his booth upstairs. No issue also!
While waiting for him to finish, we also had the opportunity to greet Dato Nelson, who also gave us a ‘thumbs’ up indicator of approval ! Yes we totally concur!
