It is with deep sadness that Third World Network announces the passing of T Rajamoorthy, a longtime and well-loved member of the TWN family. Raja breathed his last in the early hours of 24 March after suffering a heart attack. He was 79.
Raja, a senior lawyer, variously served as legal adviser and publications adviser of TWN, overseeing our publishing operations. Among the stable of publications, the one with which he was most intimately associated is Third World Resurgence, TWN’s quarterly (previously monthly) magazine of analyses and commentary on the Global South.
Raja came on board as an editor of Third World Resurgence in 1993 and, in his three decades at the editorial desk, practically lived and breathed the magazine. He would diligently source for articles from contributors and other publications, always making sure to maintain a balance of coverage among the different regions of the South and among the various sections of the magazine, from ecology, economics and health to world affairs and human rights.
And not forgetting, of course, the poems featured on the back page of each issue – for which he would draw on the substantial collection of poetry volumes lining his creaky bookshelves. His legal training certainly also came in handy to ensure that, while championing the cause of the developing world, nothing defamatory or libellous appeared on the pages of Third World Resurgence or other TWN publications!
Little known to many was Raja’s love of music, and his collection always brought him joy, comfort and peace.

It is testament to his passion and endeavour that, despite experiencing health complications over the past few months, Raja was still fretting over the choice of cover stories for Third World Resurgence – committed to the last. He will be missed. – TWN
