It is a sad day indeed when opposition parties decide to join in the ruling parties’ shenanigans and mess about with basic democratic rights, writes Wishful Accountant.

I was extremely disappointed to read about the DAP postponing its party election to concentrate on the next general election.

We are used to seeing this excuse from BN parties – but to hear it from opposition parties who are championing full democracy…. It is a sad day for democracy and those who seek to champion it.

That said, I don’t see what leg Gerakan has to stand on in criticising this move. Isn’t this the pot calling the periuk black?

There is no harm in internal elections; it strengthens the credentials of a party, and it gives voice to party members. Can we believe parties will respect national voters if they don’t respect their own members voting?

In fact, I think the Registrar of Societies should rule it illegal if office bearers are not elected at regular intervals. But I don’t think this will ever see the light of day as the ruling parties frequently defer internal elections as well.

Do the Democratic or Republican parties defer their election when presidential election is around the corner?

Party election should be a precursor to state and national election as those who have made effort and contributed should come out strong and this will then naturally show in national election.

How is the party leadership to gauge how national voters are going to vote if they don’t even know how their supporters are going to vote?

This is how when in power, ruling parties don’t understand or appreciate democratic norms and start messing about.

It is a sad day indeed when opposition parties decide to join in the ruling parties’ shenanigans and mess about with basic democratic rights.

A sad day indeed.
