In conjunction with Malaysia Day, Pusat Komas launched a short film Anak Malaysia, directed by Khor Zhen Yee from Erat Productions.

On 16 September, the Federation of Malaysia celebrated its 54th birthday of the enjoining together of three nations.

This day marks the union of Malaya, North Borneo and Sarawak which prides itself as a nation called Malaysia. It is on this auspicious day that Malaysians from different cultures and traditions came together to form our own “Malaysian” identity.

This special day must be treasured to highlight the struggle of Malaysia moving away from a history of colonisation and racism to become a nation built on equality, justice and fairness.

Malaysians celebrated this occasion by reaffirming their rejection of all forms of attempts to incite racial sentiments, religious extremism and the promotion of one ethnic grouping over the other. It is essential for us to move away from the dangerous political game, as it would subsequently erode the fabric of our multicultural and multi-religious Malaysian society.

Let us find our own ways to celebrate this diversity and be thankful of where we are today. The journey ahead together may seem arduous but as Malaysians, it seems within our reach to make this nation embrace the “Malaysian identity” – Bangsa Malaysia – which believes in unity, love and justice.

In conjunction with Malaysia Day, Pusat Komas launched a short film Anak Malaysia, directed by Khor Zhen Yee from Erat Productions, the winners of the Battling Racism in Malaysia: Innovation towards Unity competition that was held on 16 September 2016. This short story reflects the multi-ethnic cultural background of Malaysian society as seen through the lens of one family. This film is an official selection of Sea Shorts Film Festival and Freedom Film Fest.
