JD Lovrenciear pays tribute to the news portal for their perseverance and tenacity in upholding the cause of journalism.
As I sit here in a hotel ballroom in Kuala Lumpur surrounded by a sea of tables getting filled to capacity, it is hard to suppress the feeling of having known, felt and thought about Malaysiakini’s struggles, sacrifices, risks and achievements.
As I watch the video clips being screened while waiting for the VVIPs’ arrival, indeed the heart misses many beats to witness again how two men held fervently to the philosophy of journalism as the duty to inform and in equal measure to meet the citizens’ right to know the truth – which truly is the cornerstone of truthful, honourable, professional journalism.
To Steven Gan and Premesh Chandran, the sea of guests present here and the millions of Malaysiakini readers registering their vote of approval – this I am certain. To all the people who served Malaysiakini and held on to the news portal with trust, this 20th anniversary, I am sure too, is theirs to celebrate.
Malaysiakini you have pursued a dream, lived every moment, faced the challenges and served this country gallantly. This is the benchmark of true patriotism. This is the milestone that defines the salt of true honourable journalism.
Syabas. Well done. There are decades more in time to journey forward. We Malaysians can only be thankful for Malaysiakini and all the people who have been working in, working for and working with Malaysiakini.
Our voluntary writers work hard to keep these articles free for all to read. But we do need funds to support our struggle for Justice, Freedom and Solidarity. To maintain our editorial independence, we do not carry any advertisements; nor do we accept funding from dubious sources. If everyone reading this was to make a donation, our fundraising target for the year would be achieved within a week.
