Malaysia’s Online Safety Act is entering a major new phase with the introduction of the Child Protection Code and Risk Mitigation Code from 1 June.
The new rules place significantly greater responsibility on social media and messaging platforms to proactively reduce harmful content, scams, exploitation and online risks involving children.
As regulators around the world move towards tougher oversight of algorithms, platform systems and digital behaviour, how far will these new Malaysian rules actually reshape the way platforms operate and where does the balance lie between online safety, accountability and concerns over overreach or censorship?
