Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman was the sole MP to oppose the Constitution (Amendment) Bill 2024 on citizenship rights on 17 October.

He said he supported the right of mothers who give birth to children overseas to be awarded automatic citizenship for their children, but lamented the government’s move to couple the provision with other regressive amendments.

Syed Saddiq said the amendment would create a problem of intergenerational statelessness in the country.
