Crowds were seen celebrating as Zohran Mamdani was announced winner of the New York City Democratic mayor primary.
Mamdani, once viewed as a long-shot contender, surged ahead in the race with a progressive platform that included rent regulation and fare-free public transit. By Wednesday, he was leading with 43% of the vote, with 95% of ballots tallied.
Andrew Cuomo, the establishment-backed Democrat and early favorite, conceded to the 33-year-old.
If Mamdani secures a win in November, he will make history as both the first Muslim and the first openly socialist individual to assume the role.
