Mother tongue education refers to any form of schooling that uses the language that children are most familiar with. This is usually the language that children speak at home with their family members.

Studies have shown that children taught in their mother tongue understand better the content of the curriculum. However, the promotion of mother tongue education remains a huge challenge in Malaysia for various reasons such as the fallacy that the mother tongue tends to inhibit the acquisition of the national language and that it hinders national unity.

This forum highlights several issues such as the promotion of educational opportunities, equality and inclusivity, as well as the importance of mother tongue education in a multicultural society and modern education in a globalised world.

Panel members:

  • Dr Kua Kia Soong, mother tongue education activist
  • Prof Mohd Tajuddin Rasdi, UCSI
  • Assoc Prof Helen Ting Mu Hung, National University of Malaysia (UKM)

Moderator: K Arumugam, president, Tamil Forum Malaysia
