Lim Kean Chye has passed away in Penang at the age of 103.

Lim was one of the towering figures in the pre-independence era actively involved in the 1947 People’s Constitutional Proposals put forward by a multi-ethnic coalition.

One of the founders of the Malayan Democratic Union, a party that strove for self-government of Malaya in 1945, he was also one of the founders of the All-Malaya Council of Joint Action (AMCJA) of which Tan Cheng Lock was chairman. This council, made up of all political parties then, was set up in 1946 to seek self-rule in Malaya.

The AMCJA teamed up with Putera, a coalition of left-leaning Malay groups to form Putera-AMCJA. They came up with the People’s Consitutional Proposals to counter the government’s Revised Constitutional Proposals.

Check out Aliran’s interview with Lim Kean Chye in 2002, when the Reformasi movement appeared to be struggling to maintain its momentum.
