Ruth Ben-Ghiat, a New York University historian whose work focuses on fascism, authoritarian leaders and propaganda, says the storming of the Capitol was “a logical result” of Trump’s legitimisation and encouragement of right-wing extremism since 2016. “The threat to democracy is not outside our institutions only. It’s coming from inside,” Ben-Ghiat said in an interview with Democracy Now!

I can’t remember who it is but someone on the Vinyard of the Saker blog wrote that whilst Trump the man will no longer be president but the Trump movement behind him will remain and will be a formidable political force in American politics.

The USA has served as a beacon of democracy and freedom for much of my adult life. But recent[the last few years] revelations had shown how devious it had been undermining duly elected governments throughout the world to serve its own selfish objectives.
The Trump years showed how low the US has fallen. The storming of the Capitol is a real disgrace and the fact that the action was fanned by Trump’s actions is something that Americans should ponder seriously. It is time to rein in people like Trump and his radicalized supporters. Come on, at this stage to still believe the presidential elections was stolen in the face of zero evidence is a sign of detached reality!!
