Gendered disinformation: Threat to women’s political participation

Chances are, you have witnessed gendered disinformation in action without even realising it.

Think back to a moment when a female politician was ridiculed for something as personal as not wearing a hijab, or as silly as “looking ugly”, despite her dedication and service to her community.

This form of digital violence can escalate into offline harassment, reinforce harmful gender norms and create significant emotional, psychological and professional harm.

In this video, we hear directly from Syerleena Rashid, the Bukit Bendera MP; Amira Aisya, the state assembly member for Puteri Wangsa; and KS Bawani, the deputy secretary general of the socialist party PSM and recent candidate in the Air Kuning by-election, as they share their experiences of facing gendered disinformation.
