If asked to picture George Town, many of us would imagine a bustling city filled with tourists and locals alike, milling about historic pre-war buildings housing businesses that have been there for decades, interspersed with newer, modern cafes and restaurants.

But despite being a Unesco world heritage site, the city is no stranger to the loss of heritage sites, especially those situated just beyond the Unesco boundaries, with the most recent being the demolition of a pre-war bungalow on Clove Hall Road.

BFM speaks to Khoo Salma Nasution, vice-president of the Penang Heritage Trust, about the state of heritage preservation in George Town.

Talk talk talk…bla bla bla… when is something genuine going to be done to protect the heritage. Is there even a guardian with the power to stop the developers . Talking about “the potential” is such a tired cliche… Everyone knows that it’s the money that talks.

My family use to run small coffee shop at Queens Street, where the Kwan Tailor located, just after the ftuit seller cart, can be seen in the photo
