Hyper globalisation – Martin Khor

The late Martin Khor explains the concept of hyper globalisation, the neoliberal form of globalisation driven by major economic powers and multinationals in their own self-interest, and warns about the negative developments it can lead to, like extremism, neoconservatism and religious nationalism.

Their main tools to expand globalisation, according to Martin, are free trade agreements that disseminate policies crafted by the few rich countries to the developing countries.

Martin believed that only cooperation, the defence of the interests of ordinary people, and tackling the global roots of the problems could counter these phenomena.

Martin thus advocated for a new world economic order to make human development a reality for everyone. And this can only be achieved by confronting the challenges posed by institutions like the World Trade Organization, which are the vehicles of choice of industrialised countries for organising and enforcing global economic governance.
