The Negeri Sembilan state elections took place last Saturday, and the coalition pact of Barisan Nasional and Perikatan Nasional won 25 out of the 36 seats available to form a supermajority government. Pakatan Harapan won 11 seats.
This marks the second state election in a row that the BN-PN alliance has won, following its landslide victory in Johor.
It also means PH has now suffered three major electoral setbacks in succession – Sabah, Johor and now Negeri Sembilan.
These results have inevitably sparked fresh debate about the country’s political direction, the durability of new political alliances, and what they might mean for the next general election.
BFM explores all this with Dr Syaza Shukri, an associate professor of political science at the International Islamic University Malaysia, and Rajiv Rishayakaran, the Selangor state assembly member for Bukit Gasing from the DAP.
