Italy will strike once again for Palestine, this time in response to the illegal interception of the Global Sumud Flotilla by Israeli forces. The flotilla, which was nearing the shores of Gaza, carried with it 57 Italian nationals.
In response to the interception and abduction of activists, protests erupted across cities including Rome, Naples, Milan, Turin, Bologna and Genoa.
Two of Italy’s largest trade unions confirmed that they would be holding a nationwide rail strike on Friday, insisting that it was serious how “the Italian government has abandoned Italian workers in open international waters, violating our constitutional principles”.
However, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni expressed her belief that “all of this brings no benefit to the people of Palestine”, and that a strike would simply inconvenience the Italian people. She stressed how Italy was “the non-Islamic nation that has evacuated the most people from home to be treated in our hospitals, and we are one of the leading nations in the world in delivering aid”.
