Johor polls: The politics of data centres

Follow us on our Malay and English WhatsApp, Telegram, Instagram, Tiktok and Youtube channels.

Johor has positioned itself at the centre of the global digital economy, emerging as Southeast Asia’s leading destination for data centre investment.

While this has attracted billions in investment, it has also raised questions about water, electricity, land use, and who ultimately benefits.

With the state election approaching, should voters be asking harder questions about the trade-offs?

Astro Awani’s Melisa Idris talks to Charles Santiago, the director of research and advocacy organisation Monitoring Sustainability of Globalisation, co-chair of Asean Parliamentarians for Human Rights, and the former chairperson of the National Water Service Commission (Span). The other panel member is Adib Zalkapli, the managing director of geopolitical advisory firm Viewfinder Global Affairs.
