In the 1980s, Malaysia’s performing arts scene was going through a shift in the stories being staged, focusing more on local stories and decolonising the narratives.

It did this by uplifting homegrown playwrights and theatre practitioners. At the centre of this was Krishen Jit.

As one of the co-founders of the Five Arts Centre, he saw theatre as a platform to challenge the notion of a multicultural society and addressed the cracks that existed within it. It was an issue that very few were willing to acknowledge.

This is how Krishen Jit used theatre to shine a light on the cracks of a multicultural nation.
