The PH government needs to come up with a system that will ensure that every politician accounts for his or her wealth, writes JD Lovernciear.
The late Jamaluddin Jarjis, the former Rompin MP, said to have been a close confidante of former Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak, was reported not long ago as having an amassed mind-boggling wealth.
Many wondered how a career politician, who held various cabinet posts could have left behind assets said to be worth at least RM2.1bn. The inventory of assets is mind-boggling. It comprises 22 landed properties, mostly in Pahang and in the Klang Valley, and 21 bank accounts totalling more than RM15m.
Certainly in this post-election climate of creating a ‘new’ Malaysia that promises rule of law for all citizens, Malaysians have a right to know how on earth a politicians could have accumulated such wealth. Mind you, 21 bank accounts and 22 landed properties?
What kind of monitoring system and laws do we have in this country that allows individuals professing to serve the rakyat through public office, on a salary and perks determined by law, to accumulate wealth that only hard-working businessmen can dream of?

The Pakatan Harapan government needs to come up with a system that will ensure that every politician accounts for his or her wealth. Otherwise, we will see more such unexplained accumulation of wealth.
The media must be the defining factor in getting the government to return to society what rightfully belongs to all Malaysians.
